— Nine, Numberblock Rally

Nine, or 9, is a character in Numberblocks. He debuts in the episode with the same name.

He is voiced by David Holt.

Appearance[]

Nine is a Numberblock made up of nine blocks with three shades of grey on every three blocks. He has blueish-grey square-shaped eyes (because he is 3 x 3), a mouth, and limbs. He also has two eyebrows of the same colour with a long rounded rectangle shape.

Biography[]

Like Four, he likes to be a square, and is generally a nice guy who is also stronger than Four. He is considered an introvert, and mostly mingles with the squares compared to other Numberblocks. Despite this, Nine is still a helpful friend, as shown in The Three Threes and Mirror, Mirror. It is unknown if Nine actually fears round things, because in Eleven, it is seen that he is not afraid of round things, but in Square Club it is seen that he is afraid of them.

His most notable trait, however is that whenever he sneezes, he launches out his middle block and becomes Eight. This is apparently because he has a "tickly nose". How hard he launches it has varying degrees of strength; on one hand, it is not shot very far away, while on the other, it is shot hard enough to push buttons, knock down others, and even break machinery. It is even demonstrated that he can also sneeze into three Threes, propelling them in the process. Usually, the One runs back into Eight's hole to recreate Nine, though in one case it ran away from him.

In the rare occasions, it's shown that he may feel like splitting into three Threes all of the sudden. This group is known as the Three Threes, who tend to not have very good coordination with others, even themselves. For example, they explicitly shrug off the Four Fours' request for them to help, and they try and open One's honey jar in their own ways.

Arrangements[]

Nine, just like Four, can be a square, but he frequently sneezes at this shape, making him split into Eight and One. To prevent that, 9 can also be vertical, 1R+2x4, or horizontal. He can make 1,285 different shapes, and has 9,910 different arrangements.

Trivia[]

  • Nine is the first multiple of 3 who is male. The second is Eighteen, the 3rd is Thirty-Six, the 4th is Eighty-One, and the 5th is Ninety.
  • Nine is very similar to Four in many ways as they are both square numbers, both are male and are the second biggest number in their respective seasons.
  • Nine is mostly seen arranged vertically, in a square, and 1+2+2+2+2.
  • There are five episodes where he is the biggest number in.
  • Just Add One is the first episode in which when Nine is arranged 1+2+2+2+2, his face is below his top block.
  • Nine is the third square number to appear in the series and the biggest square in Series 2.
  • Nine is the second male odd Numberblock. The first is Seven, the third is Thirteen, the fourth is Seventeen, and the fifth is Twenty-Three.
  • Nine’s voice has gotten deeper in Series 3.
  • Nine's blocks have gotten darker since Series 5.
  • Originally, in Series 2, he was a Numberblock who was prone to sneezing out his "nose" (middle block), at first usually being indicated by it tingling and looking uneven. In later seasons, this has became more or less prominent of him, to the point that the other squares can also sneeze out their middle blocks. Despite this, Numberblocks still considers him "a little sneezy"
  • Nine was given differing body part colours in blocking shots as to make him easier to animate. This seems to have carried over to Meet the Numberblocks!, where for some reason 9's legs are red.
  • Nine is the only Numberblock from 1-10 to not start out in his vertical arrangement, neither make it in his debut. This is because when he was made, One jumped into Eight's hole rather than on top of him. A similar case happens with Thirteen, except it's him not making his Tens & Ones arrangement.
  • Nine is the third semi-prime, the first being Four and the second being Six.
  • Nine is the smallest composite odd Numberblock, whereas the smallest composite even number is Four. Coincidentally, both are square numbers.
  • Nine is the first Numberblock with a “nose,” the second being Six(implied in Counting Sheep with her presumable allergy to the sheep tail), third being Eighty-One, and finally Three (implied by her sniffing when she first meets I).
  • The LearningBlocks.tv website's description of Nine is "Numberblock Nine is a square like Four but bigger and stronger. He often gets a tickly nose, and if he doesn’t get to a hankie in time, his middle block shoots out in a giant sneeze. So he has nine hankies, just in case."[1]
  • He is the first Numberblock to have its first shape to not be vertical.
  • Nine is the first square that is the opposite gender of their square root, as he is male, while Three is female. The next four are Sixteen, Thirty-Six, Forty-Nine, and Sixty-Four.
  • He appears in 56.64% of all Numberblocks episodes, including the crossover specials.

Errors[]

  • In the Numberblocks colouring page in the CBeebies Special Magazine Issue 113, 9 mistakenly has 4's eyebrows.
