Grid Unlocked is the first episode of the seventh series of Numberblocks. It is the 136th episode overall.

Synopsis

The Numberblocks turn themselves around to save the Times Tables’ 5 by 5 booster grid!

Plot

The episode starts with Ten training the Times Tables' rays, when suddenly- Uh, oh: the Three and Five Times Tables' rays are failing. Let's go check on the Booster Grid and see it's all right. Bad news: it isn't. It's losing power, and without it running the Times Tables will be grounded. Fifteen in MI15 spies the trouble and is on her way. She is 3 × 5, or 5 × 3. The Five Times Table meets up with her in the elevator. Fifteen divides into three Fives to take flight. But they can't ride on her forever. The Five Times Table is losing power. Luckily the Three Times Table came along. 15 ÷ 5 = 3, so that also means 15 ÷ 3 = 5. Fifteen redivides into five Threes and goes on her way to the Booster Grid, while the Three Times Table has just enough power.

Now what? Fifteen suggests if they can fill the slots into the Booster Grid to start it up again. With the help of the ride here, she knows 5 × 3 = 15. She fills in the slot, and... the Three Times Table can already fly! Maybe that is the solution! Also with the ride, Fifteen also knows she is 3 × 5. She turns and fills in that slot, too. Turning things may speed things up. Fifteen gets her Step Squad to fill in column 1 and, when turned, row 1. The One Times Table can fly. Even turning entire rows and columns work! Now let's fill in the rest of the slots!

Ten divides into Twos, three of which multiply into Six. 3 × 2 = 6, and 2 × 3 also = 6! 2 × 4 = 4 × 2 = 8, and 5 × 2 = 2 × 5 = 10! The Two Times Table can fly now. 3 × 4 = 4 × 3 = 12, and 4 × 5 = 5 × 4 = 20. The Four Times Table can also fly. One slot left, and look: it's in a diagonal. Every number in that diagonal is a square number, because they are when a number is multiplied by itself. So 5 × 5 = 25, a square! She fills in the last lot and now everyone can fly! Now let's get back to that training, shall we?

Math Magic

Segment means the equation is only shown the Booster Grid, unless otherwise noted.

  • 15 ÷ 5 = 3
  • 3 × 5 = 15 (segment, Numberblocks and Booster Grid)
  • 15 ÷ 3 = 5
  • 5 × 3 = 15 (segment, Numberblocks and Booster Grid)
  • 15 = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5
  • 1 × 1 = 1 (segment, Numberblocks and Booster Grid)
  • 1 × 2 = 2 (segment, Numberblocks and Booster Grid)
  • 1 × 3 = 3 (segment, Numberblocks and Booster Grid)
  • 1 × 4 = 4 (segment, Numberblocks and Booster Grid)
  • 1 × 5 = 5 (segment, Numberblocks and Booster Grid)
  • 2 × 1 = 2 (segment)
  • 3 × 1 = 3 (segment)
  • 4 × 1 = 4 (segment)
  • 5 × 1 = 5 (segment)
  • 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 = 15
  • 10 ÷ 2 = 5
  • 2 × 2 = 4 (segment, Numberblocks and Booster Grid)
  • 4 + 2 = 6
  • 3 × 2 = 6 (segment)
  • 2 × 3 = 6 (segment)
  • 2 × 4 = 8 (segment)
  • 4 × 2 = 8 (segment)
  • 5 × 2 = 10 (segment)
  • 2 × 5 = 10 (segment)
  • 15 - 3 = 12
  • 3 × 4 = 12 (segment)
  • 4 × 3 = 12 (segment)
  • 4 × 5 = 20 (segment)
  • 5 × 4 = 20 (segment)
  • 3 × 3 = 9 (segment)
  • 4 × 4 = 16 (segment)
  • 10 + 15 = 25
  • 5 × 5 = 25 (segment, Numberblocks and Booster Grid)
  • 25 - 10 = 15

Trivia

  • This episode was released in the UK exactly a month after its release in Indonesia.
  • Since this episode, the One to Four times tables most likely have different voice actors.
  • This episode marks the return of the Times Tables from 1-5, the last time they appeared being Series 5.
  • Seven is the only Numberblock from One to Ten to not appear, while Nine only appears as a hologram on the booster grid.
  • This is the first episode where Times Tables meet each other.
    • Thanks to this episode, the Times Tables are no longer one-time characters.
    • This episode also confirms that the Times Tables are canonically different characters.
  • This episode's title comes from the word "gridlocked".
  • A 38 second snippet from the episode was released early on the CBeebies website to promote the seventh series of Numberblocks.
  • The Super Special Secret Step Squad Sequence changes from a white background to a black background. This is the first and only episode to do so. This is possibly because the white background created small visual glitches with the Numberlings, as seen in Fifteen’s debut.
  • It is revealed that the underground base in Hidden Talents also links to the Numberblocks Museum as seen in Heist.
  • This is the third episode to cover the Commutative Property of Multiplication, the math topic which reordering the factors does not change the product. The first two episode are "Mirror, Mirror", which showed it briefly, and "The Way of the Rectangle", which had a segment of it.
    • "Mirror, Mirror" showed the Commutative Property with lots, and "The Way of the Rectangle" showed it with arrays, "Grid Unlocked" showed it with both of these as well as multiplication equations.

Errors

  • When 1-5 says “The Super Special Secret Step Squad is here.”, the subtitles mis-render it as “The Super Special Secret Set Squad is here.”
  • When Ten rotates after saying "Let's use some Twos!", her ten-border "glitches out", similar to Forty-Two's in Rescue Racers when he does the same.
  • One time, Five Times Table's rocket is miscolored as blue when she's in the 1× variation.
