The Alphablocks are the titular protagonists of the show of the same name.
Appearance and personality[]
Alphablocks have rounded cuboid shapes with two eyes, a nose (except O), a mouth, arms with mitten-shaped hands, and legs. On top of each Alphablock is a translucent dome[1] containing their letter. C's dome is shown to be cracked, suggesting that they may be fragile. The same goes for I's, in In. The domes are also shown to not be the best at containing their letters, as both S and L's letters get flown out after sledding down a hill in the episode Stop, and they also were able to easily swap their letters in Book.
Each of the Alphablocks are uniquely designed. Most of them are based on their basic speech sound. For example, H's sound, /h/, sounds like panting when repeated fast, which is a likely inspiration for her running design. P's sound /p/ sounds like popping, hinting towards her popping powers. Other Alphablocks' designs are a pun on their names. The name of J sounds like "jay", inspiring her jay-like personality. T likes tea because his name is a homophone for "tea". Other Alphablocks' designs are more or less inspired from something else, like X.
Alphablocks in a common group have similar attributes; for example, all the vowels have stripes. Being a semi-vowel, Y's status can change at any time. Technically, R and W are also semi-vowels, but this is not covered or mentioned in the show since Y is the only fully recognised semi-vowel.
Description (Blocks Universe Website)[]
The Alphablocks are twenty-six living letters who discover that when they hold hands and make a word, it comes magically to life. In a world that runs on phonics, each Alphablock's personality revolves around the unique and highly memorable way they make their letter sound.
Diet[]
Food is commonly seen, but it mostly appears to be vegetarian. They are not vegan because they are occasionally seen drinking milk. They also love pastries and candies, possibly suggesting a species-wide sweet tooth. M can and will eat anything he can get his hands on.
Powers and Abilities[]
The Alphablocks in general have lots of powers and abilities.
Word Magic[]
When Alphablocks hold hands, a process known as "word magic" occurs, in which they can spell words out and make things based on the spelt word happen. What happens usually depends on the type of speech of the word (e.g. when they spell an noun, the thing of that noun will appear, while if they spell a verb, the Alphablocks or someone near them will perform said verb. If they spell an adjective, they or someone or something near them changes to that adjective). If Alphablocks spell a nonsense word: a word that doesn’t have a definite meaning (like "Xel", "Godop", "Jid", "Eap", or gibberish), then the word magic fails.
Every episode of Alphablocks makes use of word magic in some way or another. However, there are two episodes that do not involve word magic, those being Alphablocks A-Z and An Alphablocks Adventure.
Mitosis[]
Alphablocks are capable of creating copies of themselves by splitting, similar to mitosis; they do this to spell words that have more than one of the same letter ('picnic' for example) or to form a double-letter digraph ('oo' for example). Two or more of the same Alphablock are also capable of merging back into one, such as the two digraph EE's and one other E at the end of Bee merging back into one singular E.
Merging[]
Whenever two Alphablocks stick together, they make a digraph, causing their domes to connect. Some examples include "ch", "aw", and "qu".
Additionally, a group of three Alphablocks can merge, becoming a trigraph. Some examples include "igh", "ear" and "ure".
Glowing[]
An Alphablock is capable of glowing their dome, sometimes in different colours as well. They commonly do this while spelling words. Before they say the word out loud, their domes lightly sparkle.
If a 'nonsense word' is spelt, a fizzling sound is heard instead. Starting with Party Party, their domes additionally glow red.
Immortality[]
Alphablocks are extremely likely to be immortal, meaning they are incapable of age or decease. However, X does call them "alphamortals," possibly suggesting that only he’s immortal. Also, Z is explicitly old, and Y is very young.
Alphablocks can also breathe (and hear) in space without the use of space helmets. Alphablocks can also feel hunger, as shown with M in the episode Man.
The Alphablocks can sweat whenever they feel worried, as seen in the episodes Ants, Prank, and Outlaw.
Flight/Levitation[]
F, S, and X can all fly, while P is able to float. F and S use air, but with X it seems to be a natural ability.
Digraph PH is also seen to be capable of flight, due to mimicking F's sound.
Sudden Anatomy[]
Alphablocks are generally depicted as having mitten-like hands, but sometimes temporarily gain an index finger, usually when pointing at something.
Invisible Anatomy[]
This ability is only seen twice. T stubbed his "toe" in Best, despite the fact that he doesn't have any. A similar thing happened in Home, with O stubbing his "toe" on a gardening hoe.
Transformation[]
This only applies to their letters. When needed, Alphablocks transform their letter and switch between uppercase and lowercase.
Additionally, Alphablocks can switch their letters entirely to become a different Alphablock, although this is only seen in Book and Stop.
All Alphablocks[]
Trivia[]
- As they are part of the first Blocks Universe show, they are also the first kind of Learningblock to be created.
- Most of the Alphablocks voice actors also voice a few Numberblocks and to a lesser extent, Colourblocks.
- Alphablocks commonly laugh, gasp, or grunt by their letter sounds, and often use words that begin with their respective letter. As a result, alliteration is very common in the series.
- For some letter teams, they use words that have their sound instead.
- Because their show released several years before the other three shows and therefore predate some of the standardized design elements seen in those shows, the Alphablocks have several discrepancies that are not on the other Learningblocks. They are the only type of Learningblock to…
- …all debut in one episode.
- …have a clear part—in this case, their domes.
- …have the ability to create objects.
- …not have a known origin, though it can be inferred from the intro (and constant gag from A) that they also fell from the sky.
- …not be able to hide their anatomy.
- …have lips, in the case of some characters.
- …have noses, with the exception of O.
- …to have 2D animated faces as opposed to the 3D seen on the other blocks.
- …to be cel-shaded, though only up to the fourth series.
- When creating copies, the Alphablocks used to stretch and split. This was changed in Series 6, where the Alphablocks' copies simply pop up next to them, similar to how Do Blocks create copies in Wonderblocks.
- Counting their glass caps, at his tallest arrangement, Two is roughly the same height as all Alphablocks.
- The letters in Alphablocks are usually lowercase, but can sometimes be uppercase depending on the situation.
- To difference the male Alphablocks from the females, the females are given slimmer, digon shaped eyes, whereas males have circular eyes. The only exception to this is N and W, who have more oval-ish eyes compared to the other male Alphablocks.
